Many, many years that have passed since the Xbox 360 was unleashed, and Microsoft have just announced that 2008 was the "biggest year ever" for its gaming console:
Despite a tough economy, the gaming industry held strong in 2008 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system recorded the biggest year in Xbox history, with more consoles, games and online entertainment experiences sold than any previous year. It was a year in which life-to-date unit sales of Xbox 360 systems climbed to 28 million consoles worldwide -- expanding the product's lead over Sony PlayStation 3 to more than 8 million units.
...
Xbox 360 is experiencing record-setting sales around the globe, particularly in Japan and Europe, nearly doubling market share in these key territories. In Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) specifically, Xbox 360 has now sold more than 8 million units, extending its lead over the PS3 by more than 1 million units.
If you picked up a new console over Christmas, what was it?

An anonymous reader writes "In terms of console usage, the aging PS2 still leads the competition, according to data from US research firm Nielsen. Data the company compiled between January and October 2008 shows that the PS2 commanded 31.7 percent of the total number of minutes spent playing consoles. Only 37.9 percent of play time took place on current-gen systems, with the Xbox 360 (17.2 percent) leading the Wii (13.4 percent) and the PS3 (7.3 percent). Users even spent more time playing on the original Xbox (9.7 percent) than the PS3, while Nintendo's GameCube (4.6 percent) wasn't far behind Sony's new console either."

I still picked up a ps3 (my first console since the sega mega drive) during xmas. Best choice I've made. Prefer the controller over xbox's, the free gaming access is a bonus, bluray is a winner on the plasma screen and the longevity and 'future proofness' it offers was a good feeling.

Ps3 was designed with a 10 year cycle while the xbox360 will soon be surpassed by the xbox720 and the Wii will no doubt be redesigned.

I've loved pc gaming for years and years however I'm really enjoying the 'put in cd and simply play' style of consoles. A feeling that with PC gaming isn't always there. Your always wondering how much juice you can get of the system, is the virus scanner disabled, have I defragged, are there any new drivers, whats the new video card etc etc.

Fanboy much? All of them will milk their consoles for as long as they can, and if sony can't milk the ps3 for 10 years, it will soon be surpassed by the ps4, and if the xbox360 sales keep picking up the 720 won't be sen for a long time.

I see it lasting 10 years simply because the ps4 won't sell and it will pull the same stunt the ps2 has.

Who knows, maybe in 10 years time there'll be more than 1 or 2 games on PS3 worth buying!
